High Five Friday- April 13th

High Five Friday
April 13, 2018

The Marshfield Public Schools, through its continued commitment to promoting a community of respect, are excited to announce that they will hold their second annual “High Five Friday” in conjunction with the Marshfield Fire and Police Departments

On Friday, April 13 Marshfield’s police officers and firefighters will greet students at each of the district’s seven schools as they arrive for the school day. We are thrilled that Chief Hocking, Chief Tavares and the brave men and women of each department will have a chance to greet our students and staff and be acknowledged for the terrific work they do every day on behalf of schools.

The MPSD and Marshfield’s public safety officials have a wonderful relationship and work collaboratively to ensure the safety of our students.  A safe and secure school climate is a key component of the district’s strategic plan and working closely with these two departments helps ensure that our students can learn in safe and supportive learning environments.

Many times throughout the school year, members of the MPD and MFD interact with the students at our schools, but on “High Five Friday” they will greet the students upon arrival and give them a high five to start their day off on a positive note.  This is a tremendous way to build on the cooperative spirit that already exists between the schools and each department and is in line with our focus on cultivating a community of respect.

We look forward to “High Five Friday” and thank Chief Hocking, Chief Tavares and their departments for their continued support of our schools and for their efforts to ensure the safety of our students and staff.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey W. Granatino
Superintendent

Day of Remembrance 2018

Here's a few pictures from today's "remembrance" events held at MHS & FBMS. The students and staff wanted to honor the memory of the 17 individuals who lost their lives in last month's school shooting in Parkland, Florida.

The high school had a "Remembrance Walk" to the gymnasium (due to the snow outside) and read off the name of each of the victims while placing flowers in their honor on center court.  After the ceremony, the flowers were then laid at the foot of the Ram statue outside of the auditorium entrance to the school.

Students at the FBMS walked quietly to the gym and held a 17 minute "moment of silence" to honor the lives each of the 17 victims.  They also had signs that students and staff were able to sign throughout the day.  After posting them for a while at the school, the plan is to send the signs down to the students at Stoneman Douglas HS.

Revised Last Day of School

Due to this week's school cancellations, the revised last day of school is now Wednesday, June 20, 2018.

Let's hope we can avoid any more snow days.

Marshfield St. Patrick's Day 5K Road Race

Below is a message from the Marshfield St. Patrick's Day 5K Road Race Committee:

We have received numerous questions regarding the conditions in Brant Rock and whether or not the race will be held on Saturday March 17th. At the present time, we are working in collaboration with the Marshfield Department of Public Works and Public Safety to determine if the race can be held as planned. We are hopeful that the race will be able to take place on the 17th, however we will be holding off making a decision until after another potential weather event early next week. We expect a decision on whether or not to postpone to be made no later than Wednesday March 14th. We still hope to hold the great St. Patrick's Day Irish celebration that Brant Rock deserves after this winter!

Revised Last Day of School- June 18, 2018

With the recent school cancellations, the final day of school is now Monday, Jun 18, 2018.

March 14th- Day of Remembrance

The following is a message that Principal Keuther recently shared with the MHS community.  Within it, he  details the steps students and staff at MHS will take on March 14th to remember the 17 lives lost last month at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

I am proud of how our students and staff came together to create a plan that is respectful, thoughtful and positive.  They join schools from across the country who will take time on the 14th to honor those who lost their lives in Parkland, and who want to work to ensure we have schools that are safe from violence.

Please note that this event is only intended for MHS students and staff.  It is not open to the public.

March 9, 2018

Dear MHS Parents,

I am writing in response to the school shooting incident in Parkland Florida. Last week a national organization for youth empowerment called for students and educators to walk out of their schools on March 14, 2018, to honor the 17 lives lost at Stoneman Douglas High School. At Marshfield High School we see this as an opportunity to unite in remembrance of these lives. As high school principal, I have met with student leadership to support and assist our student body in creating an action that is organized, meaningful, safe and school appropriate. I am proud of our young people who have chosen to engage in thoughtful discussion, respectful expression and dignified remembrance, as they have planned our Remembrance Walk.

Our walk is completely student led and will include, a walk of silence, a moment of silence and reflection for each individual who lost their life at Parkland, the laying of flowers in their memory and a challenge to end school violence. This action will take approximately 40 minutes in length during our school day. It is intended only for the students and staff at Marshfield High School. We will also have an increased police presence during this expression to maintain our safe school environment.

It is very important that all students and staff understand that this response is voluntary. There should be no coercion of any kind, either to participate or not to participate, from adults or student peers. Students or faculty who wish to not take part will move to the auditorium during the time of the walk.

It is also important that everyone recognize that this action is not intended to advocate for a political party or policy position. It is NOT our role to accentuate polarization or promote our own political views. This is a Walk of Remembrance for those who lost their lives. The day after the shooting I challenged our students to commit to being kind to each other, to commit to caring for each other at all times, to commit to respecting each other and to life all of the time. Our daily choices establish the safe school climate we all expect and want. The conversation with our student leaders was amazing and we are grateful for their thoughtful expression.

Sincerely,

MPSD Wall of Honor Subcommittee

The Marshfield School Committee and MPSD Leadership team are excited to begin the process to select the district’s inaugural Wall of Honor induction class.  The purpose of this honor is to foster pride in our system through recognition of individual achievement of former students, teachers, coaches/advisors, administrators, school committee members and friends of the Marshfield Public Schools.

Voted on last fall by the School Committee, the Wall of Honor will look to “honor people of exemplary moral character who have made an outstanding contribution to the school community or education, over a period of time; or have accomplished exemplary achievement; or have displayed outstanding leadership.”

“Any faculty/administrator/school committee members or school volunteers/supporters who have not worked in the Marshfield Public School district for at least three (3) years or more, and /or students who have been graduated for three (3) years or more are eligible to be considered for nomination. Any member of the Marshfield community or Marshfield school community may nominate a candidate.”

Prior to beginning the nomination process, I will be putting together a Wall of Honor Subcommittee which will consist of the superintendent, two teachers, two community members, two school committee members and a school principal.   The subcommittee will be responsible for deliberating over each nominee’s qualifications and making a final determination on that year’s Honorees.

If you are interested in serving on the Wall of Honor Subcommittee, please submit a letter of interest to Ruthann Despier, the Superintendent's Administrative Assistant.  The letter can either be mailed to the Marshfield Public Schools’ Central Office (76 South River Street) or emailed to Ms. Despier at rdespier@mpsd.org.  The deadline for submitting a letter of interest will be Monday, March 12th.

Once the subcommittee is finalized, there will be additional communication sent out to the community regarding the nomination process.  The goal will be to have the inaugural class of inductees announced later in the spring.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey W. Granatino
Superintendent

MPSD Update- Tuesday, March 6th

The following message was sent out to the MPSD community this evening:

Good evening.  This is Superintendent Granatino with a brief update on weather events we are looking at over the next few days.  As you may have heard on the Reverse-911 call sent out tonight, the Board of Selectmen will vote a local state of emergency this evening.  As noted in the call, “this is in response to the recent breaches in our seawalls and the upcoming storm projected for late Wednesday afternoon into Thursday morning.”

After meeting with safety officials and our town administrator earlier today and based on the information provided to us by MEMA, the projected weather should not impact our school day tomorrow.  We will assess the weather throughout the day and into tomorrow evening, before determining if we have to make any changes to after-school and evening events on Wednesday or the school day on Thursday.

In the meantime, we will continue to use our alternate bus stops tomorrow around Brant Rock and the Esplanade due to the  impact the tides are having in that area.  Here is the link to those routes:

Thank you and have a good night.
